Something interesting was actually muttered in parliament during the ghey debate!
‘But should we be a nation of cowed individuals, subjugated by fear of being called hateful names? As I said, certain homosexual activists like to call people bigoted and intolerant – but they are also bigoted and intolerant towards those who disagree with them.’ - NMP Thio Li-ann
I resent the blatant attempt here to inverse the roles of victims and perpetrators. To make the victims seem like some irrational and menacing mob (that are thus to be ignored) and the perpetrators the innocent victims of that very menace. That is happening too much in our world today.
- Outrages on decency.
377A. Any male person who, in public or private, commits, or abets the commission of, or procures or attempts to procure the commission by any male person of, any act of gross indecency with another male person, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 2 years
- Now there are arguments for keeping this quaint and archaic piece of legislation (albeit arguments that I reckon are quite poo), but that doesn’t efface the fact that when you look at 377A, there isn’t any doubt that it targets a specific group in society, namely, homosexuals. It infringes on their very fundamental right to, well, fuck in private by declaring it punishable by law. Even if, as often claimed, it won’t be enforced (only in this little dystopia is legal ambiguity encourgaed!), it still implicitly threatens and marginalizes an entire social grouping.
- This would thus make gays the victims and those who uphold the laws, well, their oppressors. And if I were a victm, I would be pretty pissed off.
- And if nothing else, the one right a victim should always have is a right to be angry and spiteful. It is, at times, their one refuge when all other avenues are not opened to them. So while Miss Thio here may be offended by being called all those names, it is a bit rich of her to try to acquire the moral highground and claim victim status. Spite and rage is the moral preserve of the victim, and if we are to deprieve them of anything else, we should never deprive them of that.
